How can lichens be environmental indicators?

lichens can be used as air pollution indicators. lichens grow in exposed areas such as rocks and tree bark. Rainwater contains the nutrients to keep them alive. air pollutants dissolved in rainwater can damage lichens and stops them from growing. This makes lichens indicators of air pollution.
