This is an example where the online conversation and physical conversation are similar.
This is a picture of a chat between me and my friend Dean we are both 14 years old and he was asking me if I can go out after school. This conversation showing emoticons and abbreviations. When Dean asked me if I want to go out after school I put the thinking emoji so he knows I’m thinking about it. Rather than him thinking I’m blanking him because it may be a lat reply. Then I said NM and this means never mind but a shorter way. People may interpret this by saying it is slang but I don’t believe that it is. In this chat dean made a mistake while asking me to go out. In texts if you make a mistake then you correct it and put a star on the end. Dean corrected it by putting a star on the end.
how do we make up for actions in a texting conversation?
We use emoji’s to make up for actions while we text people. For example i put a thinking emoji to show i was thinking about the question, and dean put a laughing emoji to show he was laughing, then i put a laughing emoji because there was something i found funny. I believe that most people are just used to using emoji’s so they just put them in even if they are not needed. Also at the end of the conversation Dean put a thumbs up emoji to show that its all good and he agrees with the plan.
Some people send a picture or video to send a message to someone. An example for this is if someone has not seen a family member in a long time and they want to show their love for them but they cant show it by texting or using emoji’s. So they would send a video of them saying things that would show you more that some words on a screen.
We use slang in text and in physical conversations. For example when i speak to my brother i would call him bro.
